Optimising Your Etsy Listing

How To Implement The Keywords Efficiently (4 Steps)

Once you have a selected list of keywords. It's time to put them in the product titles and tags.

It could seem like a daunting process, but here are the 3 steps I take to quickly updating all your Etsy listings.

Step 1 - From Specific Keywords To General

First, go to “Listings” in your Etsy dashboard and go to “Quick edit”.

Put in your long-tail keywords that are the most specific first. They should be the keywords that only fits a small number of listings.

Examples of specific keywords include ‘lavender soy candle jar’, ‘Goodnotes digital planner for students’,  ‘raw rose quartz ring’, etc.

After you have finished putting in the specific keywords, move on to the more general keywords.

Some general keywords example are ‘non toxic candle’, ‘editable planner template’, ‘gemstone jewelry gift’, etc.

Fill up as many keywords as you can.

Step 2 - Reorganising Keywords To Make It Descriptive (Important Keyword In Front)

Etsy puts more weight on the first few words as they are more visible to the shoppers on the search page.

That’s why you should put the most descriptive keyword in the front of the product title. It should be the keyword that is specific, long-tail, and describe that particular product the best.

For the other keywords, I find mixing them around works the best: put the specific keywords in front in some listings, while the general one in front for others.

Step 3 - Match Keywords in Title To Product Tags

After the product titles are filled in, we can move on to product tags.

Match the product tags to the keywords in product titles as best as you can. There are 13 tags and you should use all of them to maximise your chance to rank.

There is a 20-character limit of each tag. So you may have to cut up some long-tail keywords.

For example, ‘Goodnotes digital planner for students’ can be cut up into ‘Goodnotes planner’, ‘digital planner’, ‘planner for students’, ‘student planners’, etc.

But tags need to make sense. Using the same example, avoid tags like ‘Goodnotes digital’ as it doesn’t make sense and no shoppers are searching for that.

Step 4 - Optimise Your Product Description

Write a short paragraph (a few sentences, can be broken into 2 paragraphs if necessary) in the beginning of your product description that:

  • Includes 3-5 targeted and most relevant keywords
  • Describes your products
  • Talks about how it can benefit your customers

Remember to always write for the customers. Write natural and easy-to-understand sentences.

Ultimately, the best way to improve your search ranking and sales is to boost your conversion rate. The main purpose of your product description is to convince a shopper to buy the product. If you include product benefits and all other relevant information in the description, the relevant keywords should appear naturally.
